Transgender Woman Killed in Philadelphia

The community is mourning what is at least the eighth murder of a transgender woman of color in the United States this year. Twenty one year old London Kiki Chanel was stabbed to death early Monday according to police. There have been seven other confirmed homicides against women of color who are of trans* experience this year – Papi Edwards, Kristina Gomez Reinwald, Penny Proud, Taja Gabrielle Dejesus, Yasmin Payne, Ty Underwood and Lamia Beard all lost their lives at the hands of violence.

Oregon Third State in US to Ban Conversion Therapy

Oregon is now the third US state to ban the practice known as, gay conversion therapy, for minors. Governor Kate Brown signed the bill this week, which explicitly bans the practice on those under 18 years of age.  While the law does prohibit mental health professionals from practicing this therapy, it does not prevent non- registered religious groups or organizations from performing it.

Nevada 18th State To Protect LGBT Students.

Nevada becomes the 18th state to protect LGBTQ students from bullying with a new law. The law specifically includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected groups, and creates a separate office to handle bullying complaints within the state department of education.

Texas Christian College Puts Restrictions On Gay Athletes

Letourneau University, a Texas Christian college says gay athletes can’t date or vocally support same sex marriage. The private university recently updated their handbooks to explicitly ban these items. Athletes found in violation could be dismissed from their team and lose academic scholarships.

Issue With Girl Scouts Inclusion of Trans Girls Into Their Program.

A hate group is taking issue with the Girl Scouts inclusion of trans girls into their program. The Southern Poverty Law Center labeled hate group, The American Family Association, launched a petition to get the girl scouts to do away with their policy of inclusion. Girl Scout councils have the final say on whether or not a trans girl can be admitted but holds that, “if a girl is recognized by family, school and community as a girl, and lives culturally as a girl, girl scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe.”
